How would you define that? It always seems like a million dollar question to me.

Kinja'd!!!

Mission Accomplished: Bear placed in car.

The resume writer over at career counselling took my resume in, and immediately put a giant line asking what my accomplishments are, right above all my responsibilities .

Except I don’t have an answer. Zip. Nada.

I mean, sure, it’s supposed to be stuff that you did at work, and more specifically what benefit you brought to the organization, and make a brand sparkling banner with . But the fact is, in my point of view I’m just doing my job. I’m paid to do it... it’s nothing to take home about. I just do a good job and go home, end of story. I know it’s a career- ender with this kind of mindset.

But I just don’t know how I feel otherwise. And it’s not just one, but many first time I got this. My friend reviewing my resume back then , even coworkers and bosses sometimes, that I’m always underselling and underestimating myself. I just have the habit of keeping my mouth shut unless I know the answer for sure , and still deep down second- guessing things (OK, fine, I’m a bit more open and get into FP comments with occasional alternative facts in my head...) . It’s been like this for years, more like ever since I started and has grown “worse” over years.

I’m not entirely sure how to get myself out of this hole I dug for myself.

That actually sounds like a failure if I want to apply for a job on writing for FP.

I would gladly trade with you.

“What are your ACCOMPLISHMENTS?” Well, basically, if it wasn’t for my work there wouldn’t be VoIP. “I don’t believe you! That’s not believable!” Uh, excuse me? It’s right there. “Well you must be lying!” Uh, WHAT? One, I don’t fucking need to lie. Two, why the fuck WOULD I lie, when it would immediately be exposed if they asked me ANY question about VoIP? “Well pick something else!” Okay fine how about saving a company two million dollars a year? “THAT’S NOT BELIEVABLE!!”

Won’t work so well if your resume says Boeing.

Yeah, I’ve never liked doing it, but in American business culture (which I’m assuming you’re in) “accomplishments” largely means “making things that are within my job description sound impressive.”

If you’re competent, keep your head down, and get things done, you’re already well ahead of the average worker. Think back about projects you’ve completed, and what would bad things would have happened if they hadn’t been done. Flip the bad things around into the good things that did happen; those are your accomplishments.

And never be afraid to include group accomplishments, as long as you’re not describing yourself as leading something you didn’t. But if you figured out what needed to be done, even along with other people? You “planned” it. Did you and three other people do it? “As part of a small team, $accomplished_x.”

It may also help to hang out with a PR/marketing professional, or a narcissist, to see how the pros do it

What keeps me going is my accomplishments at my last job. My current one? I constantly feel that I never do a thorough enough job, fast enough, or correctly enough. Like no matter what I do, I didn’t succeed. But out there, there are people on hospital tables whose lives my work helped improve. They don’t know that they are using something that I had a hand in, the doctor doesn’t know anything about what work I did. The operators of the equipment that I designed and built to produce the products likely don’t know my name. But I’m cool with that. I did good work, that work is still working. That makes me happy.

I want that back.

30 applications sent, 4 rejections. Can’t stop, won’t stop.

I hated that about american colleges.

“How will your studies impact the world?”

Who the fuck knows! Maybe I’ll be a pencil pusher, maybe I’ll be the Mexican Malala... I’m 17 and I just want to know where I’m gonna be in a year!

If someone ever asks what my greatest acomplishment has been, I’ll just tell them some bullshit story like “I climb ed Kilimanjaro.”

They can’t check it...

But Europe must be different, no?

Like, I think it's illegal to email your employees after hours in Germany or smt like that.

Hey there, I do this a lot too and talking to my therapist about it is starting to help. Maybe you would want to look into that. You may have low self esteem like me and need to get help building it up.

I’m in a situation where here is a slow death. In a few years we’d burn through our savings and the “kids” have no future. But 3000 miles away, I can make more money doing a job I love again in an place where the weather is better and trucks don’t rust to shit after ten years, so getting a Dakota and Corvair is very real. The schools and programs there are what they need, the social climate fits me better. And though it’s a long drive, my family is within driving range. We held off on me sending it until the youngest graduated high school. That is two months away.

Only thing to do right now?

Basically project completions. They put you on a job, you completed it. How did that project help the company? Technically you did that.

Whats awesome is accomplishments when you have no professional experience. So you come out ahead of me.
